Ribbon Cutting Opening of the CSU Archives, 1979

As part of the Master Plan for Higher Education, the California State College (later University) system was founded from several already existing colleges in 1961. The California State University Historical Archives on the campus of CSU Dominguez Hills was founded in 1979. The work of collecting and transferring CSU system records began in 1981. Since each of the CSU campuses(including CSUDH) has its own archives, the Board of Trustees decided the CSU Archives would contain only materials of system wide importance.

The CSU Historical Archives documents the activities of the Board of Trustees, the Chancellor's Office in Long Beach, the Academic Senate and many other offices or committees. The personal papers of Chancellor Glenn Dumke are also held in the Archives. Members of the Historical Archives Advisory Committee have conducted oral history interviews since 1979; transcriptions of many of these interviews are available.

Individuals involved in the California State University System are encouraged to contact the Gerth Archives about donating their papers.

Mission of the CSU Archives

The mission of the California State University Historical Archives is to collect, preserve, and create access for materials relating to the formation and progress of the system. This mandate complements the efforts of individual campus archives to collect and preserve materials that pertain to the historical development of their own campuses; only materials of system-wide impact are maintained by the CSU Archives.
