Faculty Awards

Each year, the Faculty Awards Reception honors faculty at CSU Dominguez Hills with awards for excellence and years of service. Faculty awards for excellence include:

Lyle E. Gibson Dominguez Hills Distinguished Teacher Award

The Lyle E. Gibson Dominguez Hills Distinguished Teacher Award is presented to faculty members who know their subject thoroughly, who manifest in their teaching an understanding of broad areas of knowledge, and who demonstrate an ability to select, organize, and interpret with discernment the materials relevant to the courses they teach. Recipients of the award are recognized for their ability to communicate the materials of their courses effectively, for their active interest in the progress of students as individuals, and for qualities which lead them to search continually for new and creative ways to present materials and to generate intellectual enthusiasm among students.

A recipient of the award demonstrates a great effectiveness in teaching, the ability to reach and teach students, innovative approaches to teaching, originality and creativity in the classroom, and strategies that are helpful to other instructors both within and outside their immediate fields.

All CSUDH full-time faculty and lecturers (except those who teach primarily at another campus) are eligible, if they have not have received the award in the past five years. The criteria for the award can be found here.


Excellence in Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity Award

The Excellence in Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity Award is presented to faculty members whose professional activities provide intellectual stimulation and motivation for student learning, inspire students to emulate the work of their professors, and bring recognition and prestige to the institution. Faculty members are recognized for working at the frontier of their discipline and for contributing to human knowledge.

Recipients of the award are judged by the quality and number of peer-reviewed publications, the extent of externally funded work, the visibility or recognition of creative activity, evidence of originality and creativity, evidence of excellence, including exhibitions, presentations, invitations, awards, citations, and recognition by peers and the public.

All CSUDH faculty, including part-time lecturers and postdoctoral scholars are eligible for this award. The criteria for the award can be found here.


Excellence in Service Award

The Excellence in Service Award recognizes faculty contributions to CSUDH governance and development. The award is presented to a faculty member or lecturer who has a record of service that is highly visible on the university campus and recognized by peers and the public, and shows originality and creativity in providing solutions to, and/or in resolving, institutional questions facing the university. The recipient must also demonstrate dedication to the CSUDH campus and community.

The award recipient’s service to the university may include working on committees, task forces, councils, etc.; giving seminars; developing programs with elementary, middle, or high schools; student counseling and advising; working on the Academic Senate or statewide Senate; contributing to professional societies such as the moderation of panels; and contributing to the preparation of important university documents such as mission statements and by-laws.

All CSUDH faculty and lecturers (except those who perform their service primarily at another campus) are eligible, if they have not have received the award in the past five years. The criteria for the award can be found here.


Presidential Outstanding Professor Award

The Presidential Outstanding Professor Award is presented to a full-time faculty member who has demonstrated outstanding achievements as a teacher, as a member of his/her profession, and as a member of the campus and community.

A recipient of the Presidential Outstanding Professor Award will have a record of superlative teaching, as well as outstanding contributions in all three traditional areas of the professorate: teaching, research, and service. The body of the recipient’s work in all three categories over the previous five years is exceptional. The faculty member’s professional accomplishments are also of the highest quality and make a significant contribution to the university.

All CSUDH full-time faculty (except those who do their teaching, research and service primarily at another campus) are eligible, if they have not have received the award in the past five years. The criteria for the award can be found here.
