The student staff that make up the TLTC are critical in facilitating learning and helping students build knowledge. We are always looking for dedicated peer tutors, Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leaders, Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL) Leaders, and front desk student assistants who are interested in engaging their peers in lifelong learning.

Requirements

  • Be a currently enrolled CSUDH student taking at least 6-units
  • Exhibit strong interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written)
  • Empathy for and understanding a diverse group of students
  • Must be self-motivated and be able to work independently
  • Be accountable and reliable
  • Possess good time management skills and Commit to a set schedule for the entire semester
  • Be a team player
  • Be a model student who understands the importance and application of effective study skills
  • Have at least 10-15 hours per week of availability

Job Descriptions

Tutor

Tutors work with students in 1:1 or small group sessions.

  • They provide learning strategies and suggestions to help students become independent learners.
  • Applicants who can tutor upper division Research Methods, Psychology, Health Science, PHI 120, Calculus, Statistics in the major, Accounting, and OMG are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Applicants must
    • Be open to tutor study skills and general subjects such as writing, math, and science in addition to specific courses.
    • Have a slightly flexible schedule to attend monthly training and professional development in addition to working set hours.

Position Requirements

  • Have a 3.0 or higher overall GPA
  • Must be able to provide at least 1 Faculty Reference
Supplemental Instruction Leader

Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leaders are peer facilitators who hold regular study sessions outside of the regular class time. These study sessions are designed to teach students HOW to learn not WHAT to learn. SI leaders must embody the qualities of a model student (i.e. possess strong content knowledge, understand and implement of variety of study skills, excellent time management skills etc.). SI leaders must plan on holding weekly study sessions, attending the lecture for the SI course they are assigned to, and participate in ongoing training. SI leaders may also add general content tutoring hours.

The SI program collaborates with staff, faculty, and peer educators. Through these collaborative opportunities, student employees build strong relationships with faculty and staff that can expand a student’s networking opportunities. SI also offers a variety trainings and professional development opportunities to our student employees that allows them to build and expand their leadership skills. 

Position Requirements

  • Have a 3.0 or higher overall GPA
  • Be a currently enrolled CSUDH student taking at least 6-units (4 units if a Graduate student)
  • Must be able to provide at least 1 Faculty Reference
  • Be able to commit to a set schedule for the entire semester
  • Have strong communication & interpersonal skills
Student Support Leader

Student Support Leaders assist with the center’s administrative, programming and customer service needs. The Toro Learning and Testing Center comprises of two main locations: The Learning Center is located in LIB C121 where tutoring services are offered. The Testing Office is located in LIB 5705, where students go for proctoring services for exams (GWE, SAT, CLEP, etc.). Both front desk positions have the same expectations, but different responsibilities.

  • Front Desk Expectations:
    • Student Support Leaders assist with appointment scheduling, student check ins/outs access to department services, mail distribution, filing, making copies, promoting department programming, and preparing materials for various departmental events.
    • Applicants with strong written and oral communication skills, strong interpersonal skills and experience with Microsoft Office Programs: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher are strongly encouraged to apply.
    • The ideal applicant:
      • Takes initiative and ownership in their role a student leader.
      • Understands that their role is vital to the everyday workflow of the department and will therefore be prompt and present to their scheduled shift everyday
      • Understands that their position will involve close proximity and handling of confidential student information and will therefore receive mandatory FERPA law training.
      • Has some weekend and evening availability
    • Learning Center Responsibilities:
      • Greet all students and guests that come in with warmth, friendless, and eagerness to assist with their needs.
      • Utilize and all resources to correctly direct the student/guest to where they need to go.
      • Work with the Toro Success Collaborative platform to maintain the workflow of the center, and track the usage of center resources.
      • Assistant Front Desk Coordinator with maintaining a healthy stock of center supplies that are utilized by the students and staff.
      • Assist the Front Desk Coordinator with maintaining the integrity of the center structure and guidelines.
      • Assist Front Desk Coordinator in coordinating department programming and outreach events.
      • Other clerical duties as assigned
    • Testing Office Responsibilities: Student Support Leaders have proctoring duties and responsibilities that include but are not limited to:
      • Posting directional signs; directing test takers to the reporting site, testing rooms and restrooms.
      • Arranging testing rooms; answering test-taker general (procedural) questions; checking test-takers’ admission tickets and identification.
      • Directing test takers to their specific seats; distributing and collecting test materials to and from each test taker individually;
      • Walking around the room frequently to guard against improper conduct and to ensure that every test taker is working on the appropriate section of the test; checking that test takers are marking their answers properly on their answer sheets.
      • Checking restrooms immediately after the test begins, and periodically thereafter, to be sure that the rooms contain no testing aids (for example, books, notes, writing on towels or walls, etc.).
      • Monitoring and accounting for test materials periodically throughout the testing.
      • Advising test takers that they are prohibited at all times from taking photos or recordings of any kind in the testing room, including during the administration or breaks.
      • Are expected to refrain from using their personal cell phones during the test administration.
      • Other clerical duties as assigned
