Mentorship Program

First Gen Toros Mentorship

First Gen Toros students may choose to be paired with First Gen faculty, staff or CSUDH alum. Through mentorship, we strive to provide individual guidance and resources to first generation college students as they navigate their educational journey and beyond. Additionally, mentors will provide support and encouragement to students and become a part of their success team. Mentors are provided with guidelines and training before being assigned a mentee.

Mentorship Expectations

As First Gen Toros mentors, participants agree to the following:

  • Meet at least 3 times during the semester with your student.
  • Attend the beginning and end of semester FG Toros celebrations/mentoring mixers.
  • Turn in a summary of your mentoring experience at the end of each semester.

Mentors should discuss expectations for the mentoring relationship in your first meeting with your student.

  • What does the student expect?
  • What does the mentor expect?
  • How will it work in a practical sense? (For example, what’s the best mode of communication? What is too early or late for phone calls or texts?)
