Summer Program

UBMS offers an intensive, six-week summer program for its current participants. The summer program is a vital part of the UBMS experience and is designed to create a sense of community while building the academic skills, motivation, and self-confidence necessary for success in college.

For six weeks, participants will spend their time engaged in enrichment courses in areas of math, science, English, and a foreign language. In addition, students will conduct scientific research and report their findings at the annual STEM research symposium.

To conclude the summer program, UBMS participants partake in a week-long trip touring college campuses and engaging in STEM activities.

Research Abstracts

Title: Correlation Between Caffeine and Communication

The aim of the study was to test how caffeine affects the speech rate of five teenagers who don’t consume caffeine on a daily basis. It was hypothesized that caffeine was going to speed up an individual's speech rate. To test this affect, we utilized comprehension passages including a poem, story, and article, which participants were assigned to read before intaking caffeine and after consuming one shot of it. We typically set a timer to gather data on how long it took them to read the entire work for four trials. The studies have emphasized that the consumption of coffee speeds up your rate of speech. As displayed on the graphs, we can conclude that our hypothesis was correct.

Title: Don't Depreive and You Will Thrive

Teens in America often don’t comprehend the importance of sleep. For some time, there has been controversy around the topic of whether or not the amount of sleep an adolescent gets affects their daily life, especially their academic performance. Not only do teenagers, or more specifically, high school students need to learn about “How to Get to College,” but also how to juggle school, family, social life, and self-care. To put these unanswered questions to the test, we conducted an experiment. After surveying a handful of UBMS students for a period of 30 days, the results were shocking, and we were able to draw a conclusion. Being sleep deprived has some effect on your body, but not enough to drastically affect academic performance.

Title: The Effect of Sodium Bicarbonate on Photosynthesis

The main focus of this experiment was to test how a certain concentration such as Sodium Bicarbonate affected the rate of photosynthesis by using the floating disk method. It was hypothesized that an increase of sodium bicarbonate would increase the rate of photosynthesis. This hypothesis was proven to be correct by examination of the data in the chart that is represented by the graph. It was concluded that sodium bicarbonate affects the rate of photosynthesis, as it increases the speed of electrons separating the water.

Title: K3nny, The Modified Color Sorter

We added a thermal sensor to a color sorter in the hopes of making factires even more safe. We were overall successful with our project and found our findings to be useful for creating a safe work environment. We discovered that the coding and the creation of our device was a success. If we had the right materials and technology, we potentially could have constructed the idea we had in mind. 

Title: Bean Growth Natural Sunlight vs. No Light

There are 4 potted plants; 2 in sunlight and 2 in the darkness. As each day passes, every morning the height of the plant growth will be recorded, and at the end the records will show the effects sunlight had on the growth of the plants.

Title: Water You Doin’: A Robot Story

Modern situations foretell that there will be an increase in demand of materials for a rising population, but a supply of such materials should counter this. Therefore, it would be appropriate to support a supply by developing a machine that can help provide the availability of these essential materials. This is what a robotic prototype can be designated to do. In order for this prototype to be able to work efficiently, a program for it to adhere to would be necessary for it to function, depending on a given task. This can be done, with different reactions of available features indicating different notions (specific sound for success, other specific sound for failure, etc.). This has been done and exists solely as a prototype, having developed a prototype using robotic and programmable materials.

Title: Mobile All Terrain Exploration Vehicle (MATEV)

We constructed a rover that can travel through all types of terrains and is capable of detecting any objects. We equipped our rover with an Ultrasonic sensor in order for the rover to detect any objects in its way and make it safe for the prototype to cross any terrain. Our prototype was tested using four different terrains: concrete, grass, dirt, and water. We concluded that our prototype was ineffective because we were not able to construct the rover to cross water terrains.

Title: An Investigation of Bird’s Responses to Batesian Mimicry

Authors: Doval, B., Le, S., and Lucas, J.
Research Mentor: Yang, F.

The purpose of this study was to investigate different aspects of Batesian mimicry and determine the effects Batesian mimicry has on bird’s eating behaviors. We created colored palatable and non-palatable bird food out of flour and lard. The non-palatable bird food was made with quinine sulfate, a bitter substance used to treat muscle cramps and malaria. Through the course of two weeks, three feeding trays were put out daily. We hypothesized that birds will not have a preference on the color of their food. Based on our results, we can support our hypothesis that birds do not have a preference on food color.

Title: A Crime in Time: A Forensic Study on the Memory of Teens

Our ability to remember new information peaks in our 20s, and then starts to decline noticeably from our 50s or 60s. Early adolescence appears to be a time of significant growth and development. Unfortunately, crime rates peak during this age as well. Our goal for this study is to see if adolescents can remember the details of a crime. In total, 12 volunteers were tested on their ability to remember details of a criminal's face and a crime scene. After the experiment was conducted, research was done on the memory of the adolescent age group that was tested. We came to conclude that a majority of the participants were able to describe and identify the crime scene and “criminals”. We can also conclude that our hypothesis was wrong. However, we cannot state that our results are factual because there was user error.

Title: Acid in Your Water

There are many companies that produce different brands of water; however, the real question remains: is the water we buy safe to drink? Therefore, we conducted a survey that asked students from the Trio Upward Bound Math-Science program what brand of water they drink. The top three brands of water were Fiji, Smart, and Seven Eleven. From that point on, the experiments began as we put the various waters in different temperatures to see if it would affect the ph levels.

Title: The Effects of Classical Music on Bean Plants

This study is an attempt to understand the effect of noise on plant growth and behavior. The common bean plant (Phaseolus vulgaris) has been subjected to two different sets of sound: first, rhythmic violin music; second, non-rhythmic traffic noise for over the course of three weeks. A control set of plants had been exposed to no particular noise. The music was played using normal speakers for one and a half hours each day. The parameters, such as difference in height of the plant, were all monitored on a regular basis. The results showed that the plants are not able to very clearly distinguish between rhythmic and non-rhythmic noise, but are definitely showing positive effects on exposure to any kind of sound.

Title: Self Driving Car Using LEGO Mindstorm

We built a self-driving car using LEGO Mindstorm products that will be able to sense stop signs, certain objects, and colors that appear in front of it, which will cause the car to stop. With the LEGOs we could build a prototype of a self-driving car for the visually impaired or for those unable to drive without help. The end results of our prototype concluded with good mobility, but our car failed to sense colors to trigger the commands that we programmed.

Title: Color Sorter Prototype Using Lego Mindstorm

The purpose of our project was to find easier ways in which objects of the same size but different colors could be sorted. This would allow for these items to be sorted faster and in less time. Our project does not require a person to be present at all times, which is why we can enjoy our leisure time at home without worrying about sorting any items. It can be accessible to everyone, so everyone can have time to spend with loved ones or enjoy their sleep without worrying about having to sort items.
