How to Prepare for Your Online Workshop

Mindset

The WC asks that you participate with an open mind first and foremost. Workshops are low-stakes spaces outside of the classroom that are free of judgement and assessment. Here,  students can explore and develop their own writerly identities by identifying, developing, and practicing various strategies and skills.

Materials

There are particular materials we recommend you have with you:

  1. For note taking: notebook, paper, pen, pencils, highlighters, sticky notes, etc.
  2. Depending on the workshop topic, you may want to also have some additional materials with you to make the experience more personalized. For example, if you register for the “Reading Comprehension Strategies” workshop that focuses on developing strategies for understanding the ideas communicated in a text, bring one of the texts you are currently working on in a class such as an essay, chapter from a book, T.E.D Talk, poem, ethnography, or case study.

Our workshop platform, Blackboard Collaborate, allows WPs to share files, PDFs, and images with students during the session and after the session. All materials that are shared during a workshop by the Writing Professional are available to participants.

FAQs

What is the difference between an online and in-person workshop?

In-person workshops are located in the Writing Center and take place in a classroom. To sign-up for in-person workshops, students can either enroll online via the WC Online Scheduler, or students can drop-in to the center and sign up right then and there. In-person workshops are currently unavailable due to campus closure.

Online workshops are virtual and hosted through our campus Blackboard Collaborate platform. To sign-up for online workshops, students enroll online via the WC Online Scheduler and then receive a confirmation email with a link to your “Workshop Room”.

Can my workshop attendance be sent to my Professor?

Yes, you may request an email be sent to your professor confirming your workshop attendance. To do so, add your professor’s name and email address in the specified areas when you first sign up for a workshop.

What is the latest I can enroll in a workshop?

Students may enroll in a workshop up to 10 minutes before it begins. This applies to both in-person and online workshops.

How do I cancel a workshop appointment?

To cancel your workshop appointment, log in to the WC Online Scheduler and click on the workshop topic you enrolled in. At the bottom of the page, click on “Cancel Appointment”.

What if the workshop topic I want to enroll in is full?

If the workshop topic you are interested in is full, review the workshop schedule for the month to see what other day and time is available and open. To view the workshop schedule, you can log in to the WC Online Scheduler or you can visit our workshop homepage for a list of Fall 2020 workshop dates and times.

How many workshops can I attend?

You may attend as many workshops as you like. There is no workshop limit.

Can I attend the same workshop topic more than once?

Yes, you may attend the same workshop topic as many times as you like.

Does a workshop topic that is offered multiple times include the same materials?

Workshops are designed and facilitated by Writing Professionals. All of our workshop topics contain specific objectives and goals; however, a WPs approach to those shared objectives may vary. For example, you may be interested in the “Reading Comprehension Strategies” workshop. Let’s say this workshop is facilitated by Amanda Reyes on a Monday and Christopher Potts on a Thursday. While both workshops will provide students with strategies for critical reading, they will be unique in the types of activities and strategies provided because the facilitator is different.

How do I request accommodations?

To request accommodations for a workshop, please email writingcenter@csudh.edu
