Health Education & Promotion

Welcome to Health Education and Promotion!

Health Education and Promotion fosters student well-being through various programs, services, and initiatives. Students are educated about the importance of regular exercise, balanced diets, sexual health, stress management, and preventive healthcare practices through presentations, workshops, outreach events, and one-on-one counseling.

We have a range of interactive sessions available to raise awareness and provide practical tips for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. We strive to encourage students to consider their physical, mental, and emotional wellness so they can make choices that support health-positive habits.

Our Goal

Comprehensive health education focuses on promoting an inclusive and equitable approach to health and wellness for all CSUDH students. We aim to address disparities in healthcare access and outcomes based on factors such as race, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and ability. This education includes:

  • developing health programs that recognize the unique identities and experiences that students may have and how they impact health outcomes
  • promoting access to Student Health Services to ensure that all students have access to information and resources to support their well-being
  • encouraging Health Education and Promotion staff and Peer Health Educators to create judgement-free environments
  • continuously working to understand the unequal distribution of health outcomes among different populations on campus and incorporating inclusive approaches to health promotion initiatives

Where You Can Find Us

You can find the Health Education and Promotion staff, PromoTOROs peer health educators, and volunteers at the Health Center, in classrooms, or at outreach events on campus.

Menstrual Equity at CSUDH

CSUDH is working to increase menstrual product availability and reduce period stigma on campus. Free menstrual products are available in select restrooms and campus spaces, in recognition of California Assembly Bill 367, the Menstrual Equity for All Act of 2021.

Additionally, a Menstrual Equity Working Group is actively engaged in providing more access to menstruating people on campus and increasing product options. If you would like more information about menstrual equity at CSUDH, contact JoAnn Aragon at jaragon@csudh.edu

ACHA-NCHA III Survey

The American College Health Association-National College Health Assessment III (ACHA-NCHA III) is a nationally recognized research survey and valuable tool used to gather data on various aspects of student health, including:

  • physical health
  • mental health
  • substance abuse
  • other health-related behaviors

The NCHA III is confidentially administered every two years to a random sample of current CSUDH students. The survey results help inform campus health promotion initiatives and support the development of student wellness programs at CSUDH.

The next NCHA III is set to launch spring 2024

Community Collaborations

Student Health Services is happy to announce a collaboration with the American Heart Association and Providence Health. This partnership has provided SHS with a top of the line Higi health station, which determines blood pressure, pulse, BMI, and body fat composition. Additional hypertension education programs are being developed for the fall 2023 semester.

The health station is located in the health center lobby and is free for anyone to use during normal business hours.

*Please note: Student Health Services cannot provide medical attention to staff, faculty, or campus guests. If someone is experiencing a medical emergency, they should call 911 or visit the nearest emergency room.
