RISE Program

Our Personal Statement Writing Workshop is designed to help students develop well-written statements as it is a very important part of the application process. This workshop covers the difference between a Personal Statement, a Statement of Purpose, and a Diversity Statement. The characteristics and essential elements common to all three types of genres of statements; the component parts of a formal statement of purpose; Revising strategies; and the role of rhetoric in the writing process. In addition, the workshop activities include the writing process in general, such as pre-writing, drafting (writing) and revising (rewriting). Also covered are the three levels of meaning in writing including: local (grammar & punctuation), global (organization), and stylistic (clarity, grace, fluency, persuasiveness, etc).
