Biography

Dr. Hugo D. Asencio is Professor in the Department of Public Administration at California State University, Dominguez Hills. He previously served as Adjunct Professor at Auburn University Montgomery and Project Specialist at the Alabama State University Center for Leadership and Public Policy. He has experience providing consulting services and training in the following areas: public-sector ethics, nonprofit management, social media communications, and project management.

Dr. Asencio holds a Ph.D. in Public Administration and Public Policy from Auburn University, a Master's in International Relations, and a Bachelor's in International Studies, both from Auburn University Montgomery.

Dr. Asencio’s research agenda addresses issues in public and nonprofit organizations in the following areas: ethics, leadership, management, and social media. His interests are both national and international. He is the lead author and editor of Cases on Strategic Social Media Utilization in the Nonprofit Sector, a peer-reviewed book published by IGI Global in 2015. His work appears in peer-reviewed public administration journals and books, such as: Public Integrity, Public Administration Quarterly, International Review of Public Administration, Transylvanian Review of Administrative Sciences, E-Government and Websites: A Public Solutions Handbook, Citizen 2.0: Public and Governmental Interaction through Web 2.0 Technologies, and PA Times. He served as guest lead editor of the Special Issue on Social Media Adoption, Utilization, and Consequences in the Nonprofit Sector (2017) for the International Journal of Public Administration in the Digital Age, a peer-reviewed public administration journal.

Dr. Asencio served (2013-2015) on the Board of Directors of Lunches for Learning, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization helping break the cycle of poverty in rural Honduras. He is a member of the Chapter Council of the American Society for Public Administration Southern California Chapter.

Before his academic career, Dr. Asencio played professional soccer in Guatemala. He was part of Guatemala’s Under-17 and Under-20 National Soccer Teams. He also spent a few years in the shoe manufacturing and sales industry.

In addition to his academic career, Dr. Asencio is an entrepreneur currently working on agricultural ventures in Guatemala.
