American Indian Center

The Center for Service Learning, Internships, and Civic Engagement (SLICE) is currently transitioning to the Center for Community Engaged Teaching and Research (CETR). As part of this transition, two programs that were previously housed within SLICE are being relocated: the Pow Wow and the American Indian Center (AIC), which was established in 2011 at the request of the Chancellor's Office of External Relations. Both programs will be moved to different departments on campus.

As shared by VP of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Dr. Bobbie Porter in March,

with the campus community, the restructuring of SLICE (Center for Service Learning, Internships, and Civic Engagement) into CETR (Center for Community Engaged Teaching and Research) prompted a review of how best to sustain the university’s commitment to Native American engagement, including the continuation of the annual Pow Wow. Historically, Academic Affairs housed these efforts within SLICE, but with the establishment of the Division of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ), there is an opportunity to further elevate and integrate this work within the division’s broader mission of fostering cultural engagement and community partnerships.

Moving forward, DEIJ will oversee Native American engagement activities previously coordinated through the American Indian Center (AIC). This includes hosting the Native Gathering—formerly the Pow Wow. For information, please contact vpdei@csudh.edu

In addition, the Native American Association has moved to the Department of Anthropology.
