The Emergency Medical Technician Preparation course is designed to prepare students for the EMT Training Course. The course will prepare the students to be more successful in an EMT program by introducing basic human anatomy, as well as the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) System and the role of the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).  The course also teaches single rescuer and two-person Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and provides American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) Certification.

By the end of this course, the successful student will:

  • Be certified in American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) Certification for the prehospital professional
  • Be able to describe an EMS system
  • Describe the role of EMS professionals to include EMR, EMT, EMT-P
  • Demonstrate knowledge of EMS legal issues
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of human anatomy

Course Requirements

This course is offered on a credit/no credit (CR/NC) basis. Success in the course with a grade of CR will be determined by:

  • Participating in all class activities
  • Demonstrating mastery of course objectives
  • Meeting minimum attendance, quiz and exam scores

Evaluation

  • Quizzes: cumulative score of 80%
  • Final Exam: minimum passing score of 80%
  • BLS/CPR Exam: minimum passing score of 84%

Attendance Policy

Student attendance is required for the entire period of each class meeting in order to receive a (PR/CR) grade. Late arrivals and early departures from class will be counted as a missed class.

No absences are allowed for this 2 day course.

Instructor Profile

Jess Nalley, EMT InstructorJess Nalley, Firefighter Paramedic, has over 25 years of experience in emergency response. After 8 years of Search and Rescue in Naval Aviation, Jess worked first as an EMT for care ambulance then a paramedic for AMR then for Cal Fire. Jess for the last 10 years has put his expertise to use developing and instructing Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Training Courses. He is a certified California State Fire Marshal Fire Instructor 1A and 1B, as well as a California Credentialed teacher. He is an avid adventurer with hobbies such as rock climbing, surfing, sailing, mountaineering and scuba diving.
