What is Hazardous Waste?

Simply defined, a hazardous waste is a waste with properties that make it dangerous or capable of having a harmful effect on human health or the environment.

Hazardous waste that is improperly managed poses a serious threat to human health and the environment. The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), passed in 1976, was established to set up a framework for the proper management of hazardous waste.

Hazardous Waste Label Directions

    New Hazardous Waste Label


    ALL hazardous waste must be properly labeled:

    • The new CSUDH hazardous waste label is a PDF file that you may save on your computer
    • The label comes with clear instructions

    The following information MUST ALWAYS be on the label:

    • Accumulation start date
    • Each element inside the bottle or container
    • Amount

    Additionally, you MAY NOT use any abbreviations or chemical formulas.

    Note: If you are generating the same type of waste, you may save the PDF file with all the information on it already and all you would have to do is change the date.

    Once you have fill out the label correctly, you will need to enclose the hazardous waste label inside a clear self-adhesive envelope and stick it onto the bottle or container. The clear self-adhesive envelopes are provided by EHS.

    Note: If the bottle or container is too small, you may place it inside the clear self-adhesive envelope along with the hazardous waste label.

Request for Hazardous Waste Pickup

Environmental Health and Safety has changed the way hazardous waste pick up requests are submitted. You will need to go through CSUDH Work Control to create a ticket. Work Control uses an online platform called MetaBIM. Once on the page, click on the CSUDH Employees login and complete the form.  MetaBIM Login.

In the section 'Describe the Issue or Work Needed', you must include the following:

  • The amount of hazardous waste
  • The type if hazardous waste
  • Any information that may be relevant to the pickup

Hazardous Waste Storage Area

Hazardous Waste Accumulation Area is for authorized personnel only. You may not transport hazardous waste yourself or drop it off in front of the gate.
