Our Mission
is to play an active role in preventing workplace injuries. We strive to reduce health and safety risks by focusing on prevention, identifying and mitigating potential hazards, and controlling and reducing vulnerabilities. We partner with campus stakeholders to provide guidance and resources to ensure compliance with applicable environment, health & safety regulations. Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) utilizes a hierarchy of controls to determine the best practice to reduce risk associated with workplace hazards.
What We Do
The EHS department consists of three main disciplines:
Occupational Safety
This role is what most of us think of when we talk about workplace safety and Cal/OSHA. The function of the occupational safety specialist includes:
- Injury Investigations
- Hazard Assessments
- Safety Inspections
- Fire Life Safety
- Ergonomics
- Safety Training
- Policy Development
- Coordinates the Campus-Wide Health and Safety Committee
Chemical Hygiene
There are over 60 instructional and research labs at CSUDH. Chemical safety in these labs must be a coordinated effort among faculty, assistants, and students. The Chemical Hygiene Officer oversees:
- Laboratory Inspections
- Chemical Wastes
- Chemical Inventories
- Safety Data Sheets
- Training (for both students and faculty)
- Specialty Programs (such as 3-D printing and Laser Safety)
- Coordinates the Chemical Hygiene Committee
Environmental Compliance
The state of California has a complex system of environmental enforcement agencies and laws. Any activity that adversely affects the air, water, or soil is regulated by either the state, county, or city.
Environmental Compliance manages:
- Hazardous waste disposal
- Environmental permits
- Stormwater and wastewater
- Oil storage tanks and containers
- Indoor environmental testing
- Environmental training
- Regulatory inspections
Environmental Health and Safety also works with facilities and planning to ensure that new constructions and remodeling projects 'design out' safety problems that could be costly to add later.
