Silica Dust Exposure Control Plan

Silica is a common mineral found in many natural occurring materials such as stone, quartz, and granite. It is also found in man-made materials such as brick, mortar, and concrete. During high energy operations like cutting, sawing, drilling, or sand-blasting, tiny particles of dust are formed, known as respirable crystalline silica. Workers performing these tasks are at risk for breathing in the dust, making them more vulnerable to associated illnesses. Long term exposures can result in serous diseases such as silicosis, lung cancer, and kidney disease.

This policy outlines measures designed to control the generation of concrete and masonry dust and sets parameters for the types of work conducted by CSUDH employees.
