Trenching and Excavation Program

Excavations are any man-made cut, cavity, trench, or depression in the earth's surface formed by earth removal.

Trenches are narrow excavations made below the surface of the ground. They are dug for the purpose of building new constructions and to maintain or service underground systems, such as piping involved with water and sewer lines.

Excavations and trenches can be hazardous to work in and around. Employees must be protected from falling in, cave-ins, and obstacles such as pipes, wires, and tree roots.

This safety program applies to all CSUDH employees who work in and around a trench/excavation and to all CSUDH employees while performing regularly scheduled or emergency trenching and excavation activities. Outside contractors must maintain their own procedures and must comply with state and federal regulations as well as CSUDH policy.
