Orientation

Intent and NSO Deadline May 1

We are thrilled to welcome you to our Toro family! As part of the enrollment process, all conditionally admitted transfer students and returning students are required to attend New Student Orientation (NSO). NSO events for transfer and returning students are held on select dates in June and July. The program is designed to answer all of your questions regarding the enrollment process, academic advising, and course registration. Our goal is to give you a strong start as you embark on your journey at CSUDH.

NSO is a mandatory enrollment requirement. Students who do not register by the deadline, or students who do not attend a scheduled NSO date, are not eligible to enroll at CSUDH for the academic year in which they applied.

Who Can Attend?

New Student Orientation is open to conditionally admitted students who have submitted their Intent to Enroll and paid the $125 intent to enroll deposit by the May 1st deadline. Students who do not meet admission requirements or deadlines are not eligible to attend NSO. Students who are waitlisted or in the process of appealing an admissions decision are not eligible to attend NSO.

Students will only receive full admission once final transcripts are received and verified by the admissions office. The final transcript deadline is July 15, 2020. There may be instances in which a student attends NSO and then their admissions status changes based on a review of final transcripts.

Guests are not permitted to attend the student NSO program, unless approved by the NSO committee prior to the event. To be approved, students must provide documentation showing serious and compelling reasons that a guest is needed. Reasons include but are not limited to disability accommodations. If you have a disability and require accommodation for the NSO event, please email orientation@csudh.edu at least 10 days prior to the scheduled NSO date to discuss your accommodation request. We do not offer a Parent/Guardian orientation program for transfer NSO dates.

What Do I Have To Do Before I Attend?

You will need to meet a number of requirements before you can register for Transfer/Returning New Student Orientation (NSO):

  1. Activate your my.CSUDH.edu account. Your login information was included in your acknowledgement letter. If you are having difficulties activating your account please contact the IT Help Desk at (310) 243-2500.
  2. Activate your ToroMail account and check it regularly, so you do not miss important information that may be sent to you.
  3. Make sure you have met all your other deadlines, such as Financial Aid and Admissions. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is due March 2 and supporting documents by May 10. Although submitting a FAFSA application is not required to attend NSO, students interested in applying for financial aid should do so well before NSO, in case there are issues or documentation that is required. You will be able to speak with a Financial Aid representative during NSO.
  4. Submit your Intent to Enroll and your $125 deposit (which will be applied toward your tuition) by May 1, 2019.
How Do I Register for NSO?

New Student Orientation registration is open to conditionally admitted students who have submitted their Intent to Enroll and paid the $125 intent to enroll deposit by the May 1st deadline. Students must register and pay the $99 NSO fee by May 1, 2020.

Registration for NSO occurs in the my.CSUDH.edu account. Students must submit the Intent to Enroll before they are eligible to register for NSO.

Once a student submits the $125 Intent to Enroll deposit, the student will wait 24 hours for their my.CSUDH.edu account to update, at which point the student will then have access to register for NSO. If you have submitted your Intent to Enroll deposit more than 24 hours prior and still do not have access to NSO registration in the campus portal, contact the Orientation program for assistance.

What Will NSO Cover?

New Student Orientation (NSO) is a program that helps students transition to CSUDH. At NSO, you will receive:

  1. Hands-on help with online registration for fall courses
  2. Academic advising to ensure you are picking the right classes to graduate
  3. Useful financial aid information and information on how to choose and accept awards
  4. Introduction to student life, activities, events, and support services on campus
  5. An opportunity to meet other students who are within your major and college
  6. A CSUDH student ID (Please make sure you bring a photo ID when you attend NSO, so that you may receive your CSUDH ID)

Please Note: University Housing accommodations will not be covered during New Student Orientation, if you have any questions regarding University Housing please email housing@csudh.edu or call (310) 243-2228.

What Should I Expect?

NSO is a mandatory enrollment requirement, and students who do not register for NSO or students who do not attend a scheduled NSO date will not be allowed to enroll for the academic term in which they applied. To prepare for NSO, please review the following information:

  1. NSO is a full-day event and students are expected to check-in on time and stay until the end of the day.
  2. If you arrive late to NSO or leave early from NSO, you will be marked as not attended, and the NSO hold will be put back on your record.
  3. You should wear comfortable clothing as there will be walking, sitting, standing, and other activities.
  4. Lunch will be provided. However, we recommend that you bring water and a snack, as breakfast and dinner are not provided.
  5. Admissions, Financial Aid and other CSUDH offices will be represented at NSO, so it is in your best interest to gather any information or documents that are still outstanding and turn them in before the deadline.
  6. If you miss your NSO date, you will need to petition to reschedule your NSO. Petitions are not a guarantee and official documentation as to why you missed your date will need to be provided. Only petitions that show sufficient official documentation as to why you were either medically or legally unable to register for NSO or attend a scheduled NSO date will be considered. It is important to not miss your registered NSO date.

If you have questions regarding the NSO requirement, or the policies regarding orientation, please email orientation@csudh.edu.

When is Orientation?

Transfer & Returning NSO sessions are scheduled throughout June and July. Students may select the date that works best for them, on a first-come, first serve basis. Seating is limited and the dates listed below may not be available if you wait too long to register. Registration closes May 1st, so we encourage you to register early. Conditionally admitted students are able to register for NSO after submitting the Intent to Enroll and paying the $125 deposit.

Please be aware that summer travel plans are not considered an approved reason to miss NSO. We highly recommend scheduling your summer travel plans around NSO, as NSO is a mandatory enrollment requirement.

How Much Does NSO Cost?

The fee for New Student Orientation is $99. Students must submit payment for Orientation to finish and finalize their NSO registration. All Orientation fees are non-refundable regardless of whether the student does not attend the NSO date or their admission status changes. NSO fees will cover all services and materials provided during the entire event. Items provided include NSO Student Handbook, CSUDH gear, and lunch.

I Missed NSO Registration/I Missed My Scheduled NSO

NSO is a mandatory enrollment requirement for all incoming undergraduate students (freshmen, transfer, or returning). Students who missed the deadline to register for NSO, or students who do not attend a scheduled NSO date, are not eligible to enroll for the academic term in which they applied.
