1. Prepare Your Message

A sample message for alumni has been provided below, but can be modified to suit any audience. Have an abridged version ready in case a phone call goes to voicemail.

Key points for writing a message:

  • Introduce yourself, including your address, so that the staff can identify your constituency.
  • State the reason for your call and the action you'd like your legislator to take.
  • Optional: make it personal. If you can elaborate on why this issue is important to you, share it!
Sample Message to Legislators (From an Alum)

As your constituent and a proud graduate of California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), I respectfully urge you to protect the California State University (CSU) funding by stopping the proposed $375 million cut and upholding the commitments outlined in the Governor’s Multi-Year Compact.

While I recognize the state’s budget challenges, reducing the CSU’s funding will harm its 460,000 students, delay thousands of students from graduating and entering the workforce and hinder economic growth. The CSU and each of its universities such as CSUDH are of critical importance to our state and community; each campus represents the best of what California has to offer in terms of high-quality education, workforce development, and social mobility. I know this from firsthand experience as a graduate from CSUDH. My degree from CSUDH has made it possible for me to build a better life for myself and contribute back to the economy.

The CSU simply cannot absorb a nearly $400 million cut to its budget. To put this into perspective, a cut of this size is equivalent to the cost of employing nearly 2,400 faculty, or 3,300 staff, or nearly 20,000 course offerings. Students will have larger class sizes and fewer courses available, and it will take students longer to graduate. At my alma mater, the proposed cuts would amount to a devastating $12 million. The harm to CSUDH would take decades to recover from. This is sad, since the campus is making so much progress to serve our community. I implore you to not let this happen.

Additionally, the proposed cut of $375 million is 8% of the CSU’s state funding. A cut of that size is not equitable when compared to the cuts other state agencies are facing. I urge you to prioritize CSU in the 2025-26 state budget and to not cut its funding. Thank you for your consideration of this request and for your support of the CSU and its students.
