Science Society
In 1986, several science students and I founded the Science Society of CSUDH, a club dedicated to bringing science students and faculty together for scientific lectures, workshops, conferences, field trips and other events that further the students' social and professional growth. Since then, the Science Society has been chosen by the national office of the American Chemical Society as either an "Outstanding" or "Commendable" student chapter sixteen times (every year that we have submitted our annual report).
I have been the faculty advisor for the club since its inception.
This article about the Science Society appeared in the Los Angeles Times.
SCALACS
I have been on the Executive Committee of the Southern California Section of the American Chemical Society since 1991. I chaired the Education Committee from 1991 to 1996, was Program Coordinator of the Section in 1996 and 1997, served as chairperson of the section in 1997 and represented our chapter as an alternate councilor to the national ACS from 1996 to 1998.
The chapter received the public relations award for 1996 from the ACS national office, and the Phoenix Award for 1997 in the categories of High School Programming and Minority Outreach. Three of my Education Committee's nominees received the ACS Western Region Award in High School Teaching, and we succeeded in qualifying several high school students from Southern California to the national and international Chemistry Olympiad teams.
In 2009, the National Office awarded SCALACS the Chemluminary Award for Best Student Affiliates Event nationwide. This award was given for the Science Society's 2008 National Chemistry Week event, held at CSUDH.
AMP
The CSUDH Program of the Alliance for Minority Participation is offering workshops in the spring of 2010 for two courses I teach, CHE 316 and CHE 312, as well as for other science and math courses. The telephone number for the AMP office is 310-243-3835
From the fall of 2000 through the summer of 2003 I was director of the CSUDH AMP. At that time, our program served more students than all but one of the 17 other CSU campuses participating in the AMP.
