Approved by Acclamation 

Whereas: Dr. Garry Hart joined the faculty at California State College, Dominguez Hills (CSCDH) having earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of California, Riverside (1966), a Master of Arts degree at the University of Oregon, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree at Kansas State University (1970), and

Whereas: Dr. Garry Hart began his career at California State College, Dominguez Hills in 1970 as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics, earned tenure and promotion to Associate Professor in 1975, and promotion to Professor in 1983,and

Whereas: Dr. Garry Hart served as a dedicated faculty member, administrator, colleague, and mentor who served at CSCDH for four years from 1970 to 1974 and at CSUDH from the time it was awarded university status in 1974 for an additional thirty-three years to 2007;and,

Whereas: Dr. Garry Hart was welcoming and supportive of staff and faculty in the interviewing and hiring process, including personal gestures that are still remembered, and continued to support their growth and development thereafter, and

Whereas: Dr. Garry Hart “Garry” was  “always, first and last, a "students first" guy, to the point that when he was Chair of the Department of Mathematics, he required all his faculty colleagues us all to teach remedial math courses so that we would "know our students" and the difficulties they face. Whenever someone proposed a new initiative he always asked "OK, how will our students benefit from that?”” and

Whereas: Dr. Garry Hart “when personal computers became available, pushed faculty hard to incorporate them into math teaching, and obtained a grant to purchase a set of personal computer workstations for a classroom so math and science students, including those students that needed remedial math, could take advantage of software that was then appearing.”

Whereas: Dr. Garry Hart served as coordinator of Academic Advising in 1970, and

Whereas: Dr. Garry Hart served as Chair of the Academic Senate, CSUDH in 1983-85, and

Whereas: Dr. Garry Hart served as Chair of the Department of Mathematics in 1985-86, and from 1990-1998, and

Whereas: Dr. Garry Hart served as Acting Associate Dean for Student Academic Advancement, College of Arts and Sciences in 1999, and

Whereas: Dr. Garry Hart served as Acting Dean of the College of Liberal Arts from 2005-2007, and·  Whereas: Dr. Garry Hart returned to provide the College of Arts & Humanities with greatly needed stability during critical transitions in 2014-15, and

Whereas: Dr. Garry Hart as Acting Associate Dean of the College of Arts & Humanities at CSUDH did much to strengthen the Department of History as it was separated from the Department of Philosophy through several new tenure line hires, significantly increasing the size of the department, helping balance faculty service, strengthening the student experience, and growing a close-knit community among students, faculty, and staff that serves the Department of History to this day; and

Whereas: Dr. Garry Hart possessed a great concern for the success of CAH programs and CSUDH programs in general, and

Whereas: Dr. Garry Hart “Garry” was “a big, cheerful man, a little clumsy, never got mad, sometimes wore cowboy boots and hat, drove a pick-up truck, and might accidentally break things when he came bounding into your office waving his arms around full of enthusiasm for some idea he had,” and

Whereas: Dr. Garry Hart led the math department as Chair, and the College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences as dean through some challenging times, always cheerfully, always optimistic, and always fair to everyone;” and

Whereas: Dr. Garry Hart possessed to a greater degree a passion for the success of faculty, staff, and students,  and

Whereas: Dr. Garry Hart was a nice guy, and was easy to talk to, and

Whereas: Dr. Garry Hart was a down-to-earth person with a wry and wonderful sense of humor, and

Whereas: Dr. Garry Hart had common sense, a wry sense of humor, a kind heart, and wit, and

Whereas: Dr. Garry Hart was passionate about the history of pens and told pen show stories, and through his animated stories “took” his colleagues to the various countries he traveled to, and

Whereas: Dr. Garry Hart was a man of great integrity, and

Whereas: Dr. Garry Hart was an integral part of CSUDH for many decades, and

Whereas: Dr. Garry Hart is described by his colleagues including the faculty and staff he hired as being a pleasure to work in different capacities; and

Whereas: Dr. Garry Hart retired in 2007 and became a member of the Emeritus Faculty in 2011.

Whereas: Dr. Garry Hart colleague, mentor, teacher, administrator, supervisor, mentor, and friend, and

Whereas: “Everybody loves Garry,” and

Whereas: Dr. Garry Hart passed on peacefully on August 13, 2023 and is sorely missed, therefore, be it

Resolved: That the California State University, Dominguez Hills Academic Senate mourns the passing of Dr. Garry Hart, beloved by colleagues and students alike, honors his contributions to our university and to the community, and extends condolences to his family, friends, staff, faculty, and to our students, who he always put first, nurtured and inspired.
