Katherine Hammitt holds a PhD in French and Francophone Studies from the Department of Comparative Studies in Literature and Culture at the University of Southern California. Her dissertation, “Beyond the Sea that Separates: Voices from Francophone Oceania,” explores the use of form and voice in literature from Mā’ohi Nui/French Polynesia and Kanaky/New Caledonia. Her research explores the oceanic nature of exchange within the literary community of the Pacific, tracing historic routes that cross linguistic divides. Her work on Tahitian author Chantal Spitz has been published in the Australian Journal of French Studies, Imaginaries, and the Cordite Poetry Review, and a chapter on Kanak novelist Isa Qala is forthcoming from Liverpool University Press. Dr. Hammitt’s research and teaching practices are also informed by her work in translation, which emphasizes the diversity of French as a global language.
