How to Support a Student

Supporting a Student

Due to the role you play in the students’ academic and professional career, they may share experiences of interpersonal harm (sexual abuse, intimate partner abuse, and stalking with you.

Here are some tips to provide support:

  • Thank them for trusting you
  • If they are in immediate danger call 911
  • Inform the student about your obligation to notify the Office of Equity and Inclusion
  • Refer them to CAPE or other appropriate resources

Please contact CAPE with any questions, consultation or general support by calling (310) 243-2567.

Referring Students to CAPE

Because of the sensitive nature of the issues CAPE addresses and potential safety concerns, we do not reach out to individuals referred to us. If you are working with a student who may benefit from CAPE’s services, the best way to connect them with us is by sharing information about our office and directing them to our website at www.csudh.edu/cape , where they can schedule an appointment.

If the student is in a safe environment and it’s appropriate for them to receive printed materials, you can also provide CAPE’s Information Handout for reference.
