Construction Phase-S&I

Science & Innovation Building

The new Science & Innovation Building is a three‐story instructional building located south of the existing Natural Sciences & Mathematics (NSM) building.  The new 91,000 GSF facility will house teaching and research laboratory space for Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and CISE (Center for Innovation in STEM Education), including a maker‐space fabrication lab. The building has been situated to create a landscaped courtyard south of the existing NSM building, which will link the two buildings and provide an outdoor space for congregation and collaboration.

The project will be designed and constructed to achieve Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) “Gold” Certification. Sustainable design features include provisions for smart controls for lighting and natural ventilation (in non‐lab spaces), open space on the site, advanced energy metering, use of recycled and regional materials, optimized energy performance and water efficient landscaping, subsurface drip irrigation for water reduction measures, energy efficient LED lighting fixtures, indirect natural daylighting and low‐flow plumbing fixtures.

What's Required of Me?

Please be aware of construction activities around the South Academic Complex and always watch for construction traffic, especially along Birchknoll Drive and Unity Drive. The dedicated haul route for the contractor will be to/from Central Avenue and Pacific View Drive.  Pedestrian access (delineated in red on the Construction Staging & Construction Parking Plans map) around the project site will remain open and available during the construction phase with minor exceptions.
