Camille Gibbs Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Award $1000 awarded every Spring to an IDS major

Camille Gibbs spent her life helping others, worked full-time, and was a mid-life student on the verge of accomplishing her life-long dream of a college degree. Prior to her heartbreaking murder in 1991, Ms. Gibbs was an IDS/PACE major who began her studies here in 1989; she is one of the few persons who have been awarded a posthumous degree from CSUDH. She was an exceptional person. Her husband, Leroy, said she had lived a full life but wanted to do much more, and she felt special pride as an African American woman pursuing her bachelor’s degree. The week of her murder, the following quote from Leroy Gibbs appeared in The Daily News: “Many blacks face disadvantages during the early education years, and she considered this an accomplishment. Every A that she got, she deserved,” he said. “Her life was finally coming to fruition – all her dreams were coming true. This is not the way it should have ended.” In her honor, her family and co-workers joined with her fellow students and her professors to establish a scholarship in her name that would help future IDS/PACE students returning as adults to college.

Criteria for the Camille Gibbs Memorial Endowed Scholarship award

Reflecting on the purpose of this award, the applicant should submit a personal statement not more than 500 words that describes

1. career and/or personal goals
2. the reason for returning to college
3. the need for scholarship assistance

Note: Applicants must be enrolled in IDS/PACE as an undergraduate major and be returning to college as an adult (21 or older)

Rubric: Meets eligibility criteria, offers compelling reasons for receiving the award, describes career and/or personal goals, demonstrates financial need, and provides thoughtful reflection on the purpose of the award.

David Heifetz Memorial Endowed Scholarship

IDS and Labor Studies Scholarship $1000 awarded every Spring to an IDS or Labor Studies major.

Professor David Heifetz was the chair of IDS/PACE for many years, and he passed away suddenly in May of 2006. He earned his doctorate at UC Irvine and then taught at CSUDH for over 30 years. He was also a Fulbright scholar in England. In addition to his scholarly activities, his life’s work was dedicated to education, particularly the education of working adults returning to college after years of absence from the academic setting. He mentored thousands of students, guiding them towards realizing their dream of a college degree even when their commitments in life made the goal seem unattainable at times. In his honor, his family and his fellow professors joined with IDS/PACE students (past and present) to establish a scholarship in his name to provide financial assistance to a deserving IDS/PACE or Labor Studies student.

1. their chief areas of interest in their studies,
2. intellectual/academic achievements of which they are proud, and
3. future goals they might have such as graduate studies once their BA is complete.

Note: Applicants must be enrolled in IDS/PACE or Labor Studies as an undergraduate major and be returning to college as an adult (21 or older)

Applicant may reapply each year they are eligible.
