College of Education Scholarships – 2024-2025

The College of Education is committed to preparing teachers, counselors, and school leaders. We believe that educators, in all roles, have the ability to improve the lives of children through greater access to educational opportunities. At the College of Education, we understand that training to become an educator often requires a full-time course load as well as a significant fieldwork commitment. There are a number of financial aid options, including loans, grants and scholarships available to make it more affordable for aspiring teachers and educators to focus on completing their training. The COE Scholarship Application for 2024-2025 closed on February 16, 2024. Thank you to COE students who applied for a scholarship. Please check your Toro email for an announcement from the Financial Aid Office. Notifications will start going out April 8, 2024

Bergen Family Endowed Scholarship

The Bergen Family Scholarship is designated for a high achieving student within the Teacher Education Multiple Subject program.

Amount: $1000

Requirements:

  • Full-time student in the TED Multiple Subject Program
  • 3.5 or above GPA
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Preference to those pursuing a Bilingual Authorization

Brazzeller Family Credentialing Assistance Scholarship

Amount: $4750

Requirements:

  • Enrollment in a credential program, student teaching or intern options
  • Financial need
  • Students from underrepresented groups and students of color are encouraged to apply.

Naomi Byers Scholarship

The Naomi Byers Scholarship is designated for a student enrolled in the Teacher Education division at CSUDH. The recipient should be pursuing a single subject teaching credential in Mathematics, Life Sciences or Physical Science.

Amount: Varies, up to $1500

Requirements:

  • Enrollment in Teacher Education Division
  • Student teaching at LAUSD secondary school
  • Preparing for senior subject teaching credential in Mathematics, Life Sciences, or Physical Science

CA Retired Teachers Association South Bay Division # 46

The CA Retired Teachers Association South Bay Division #46 Scholarship is designated for a student enrolled in the Teacher Education program at CSUDH.

Amount: Varies, up to $1000

Requirements:

  • Must be enrolled in the Teacher Education Program
  • Student teaching
  • 3.0 or above GPA
  • Demonstrated financial need

California Retired Teachers Association Orange County Central Division #44

The California Retired Teachers Association Orange County Central Division #44 Scholarship is designated for a student enrolled in the Teacher Education program at CSUDH.

Amount: Varies, up to $1000

Requirements:

  • Enrollment in the Teacher Education Program
  • Student teaching
  • 3.0 or above GPA
  • Demonstrated financial need

Carson Companies Scholarship

The Carson Companies Scholarship is designated for a student who is pursuing a Liberal Studies major. The student should demonstrate high academic achievement.

Amount: Full payment of in-state & CSUDH mandatory registration fees

Requirements:

  • Liberal Studies major
  • May also support Liberal major pursuing a teaching credential
  • 3.5 or above GPA

COE Honorary and Memorial

The COE Honorary and Memorial Scholarship is designated for a student in the College of Education.

Amount: Varies, up to $1000

Requirements:

  • Student in College of Education
  • 3.0 or above GPA

College of Education Master’s Endowed Scholarship

The College of Education Master’s Endowed Scholarship is designated for a student pursuing a master’s degree in Education at CSUDH. The scholarship is intended for a student working or planning to work in PreK-14 education.

Amount: Varies, up to $1000

Requirements:

  • Student pursuing a master’s degree in Education
  • Applicant is working or planning to work in the PreK-14 education field
  • 3.5 or above GPA
  • Personal statement (2 page limit) addressing how completion of the master’s degree will (1) affect the professional growth of the applicant and (2) improve PreK-14 education

Davis Family Graduate Education Endowed Scholarship

The Davis Family Graduate Education Endowed Scholarship is designated for a student who is pursuing a Master’s Degree in the Curriculum and Instruction program. The successful applicant must have two or more years of successful teaching experience in urban schools.

Amount: $500

Requirements:

  • Must be pursuing a MA in the Curriculum & Instruction program
  • 3.5 GPA or above
  • Must have two or more years of successful teaching experience in urban schools

Doris A. Davis Endowed Memorial Scholarship

The Doris A. Davis Endowed Memorial Scholarship is designated for a student who is enrolled in a College of Education program. The successful applicant must have graduated from one of the high schools in the City of Compton.

Amount: Varies, up to $1500

Requirements:

  • Student who graduated from one of the high schools in the City of Compton
  • Enrolled in a College of Education program
  • Pursuing a teaching credential

Robert T. DeVries

Amount: Varies, up to $500

Requirements:

  • Multiple or single subject student teacher
  • Making education a second career
  • High academic standing
  • Financial need

Lawrence DeVoogd Endowed Scholarship

The Lawrence DeVoogd Endowed Scholarship is designated for students enrolled in one of the following College of Education programs: teacher education, liberal studies, teaching credential, and/or master’s degree in Education.

Amount: Varies, up to $1000

Requirements:

  • Enrolled in one of the following College of Education programs: teacher education, liberal studies, teaching credential, and/or master’s degree in Education
  • Minimum 2.8 GPA or above
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Must complete personal statement (200-250 words) articulating how students learn best

Hilda S. Baca Fetcenko Endowed Memorial Scholarship

The Hilda S. Baca Fetcenko Endowed Memorial Scholarship is designated for a student enrolled in a College of Education program who is working toward a bilingual (Spanish/English) certification.

Amount: Varies, up to $1200

Requirements:

  • Student enrolled in a College of Education program
  • Working toward a bilingual (Spanish/English) certification
  • 3.2 or above GPA
  • Demonstrated financial need

Miguel Gallegos Memorial Scholarship

The Miguel Gallegos Memorial Scholarship is designated for a student enrolled in College of Education program, who is working toward a bilingual (Spanish/English) certification.

Amount: Varies, up to $1000

Requirements:

  • Student enrolled in a College of Education program working toward a bilingual (Spanish/English) certification (preference given to initial certification)
  • 3.5 or above GPA
  • Demonstrated financial need

Kaufman Family Endowed Scholarship

The Kaufman Family Endowed Scholarship is designated for students in the Multiple Subject Student Teaching option who intend to teach in an urban school.

Amount: Varies, up to $1000

Requirements:

  • Multiple subject student teacher intending to teach in an urban school
  • 3.0 GPA in the last 60 units of undergraduate & graduate work
  • Demonstrated financial need

Joette Lavarini Memorial Scholarship

The Joette Lavarini Memorial Scholarship is designated for a student who is pursuing student teaching at an elementary school. The student must have high academic standing to be eligible.

Amount: Varies, up to $500 

Requirements:

  • Student teacher at an elementary school
  • High academic standing
  • Demonstrated financial need

Barry “Poppa” Levinson Endowed Scholarship in Education

The Barry “Poppa” Levinson Endowed Scholarship in Education is designated for a student with special needs pursuing a degree in the College of Education at CSUDH.

Amount: Varies, up to $1000

Requirements:

  • Student with special needs pursuing a degree in a College of Education undergraduate or graduate program and/or
  • Student pursuing degree in Special Education

Laura E. Settle Scholarship. 

Amount: $4000

Requirements:

  • Enrollment in the credential program
  • High academic standing
  • Financial need

Gil and Shirley Smith Scholarship. 

The Gil and Shirley Smith Scholarship is designated for a student within the College of Education. The student must be a returning undergraduate student with at least one semester of coursework remaining in their pre-teaching or teacher prep program.

Amount: Varies, up to $1000

Requirements:

  • Student in College of Education
  • Returning CSUDH undergraduate with at least one semester of coursework remaining in their pre-teaching or teacher prep program.
  • Minimum 3.0 or above GPA
  • Demonstrated financial need

Stanley Prep CSUDH International Endowed Scholarship

The Stanley Prep CSUDH International Endowed Scholarship is designated for a student within the College of Education who is participating in a study abroad program in South Korea, or for an international student pursuing a degree or certificate in education.

Amount: Varies, up to $1000

Requirements:

  • Student in College of Education participating in a study program abroad in South Korea, or an international student pursuing degree or certificate in Education
  • 3.0 GPA
  • Personal statement (up to 500 words) articulating how scholarship will help them achieve their goals

Sidney Family Scholarship 

Student in the College of Education who is a parent and pursuing a degree or credential.

Amount: $1,000

Requirements:

  • Financial need
  • Student who demonstrates Hattie Mae Sidney’s motto-- “If I can help somebody as I pass along, my living shall not be in vain.”
  • Students from underrepresented groups and students of color are encouraged to apply.

Teaching Credential with Added Authorization in Computer Science Scholarship

The Teaching Credential with Added Authorization in Computer Science Scholarship is designated for a student pursuing their preliminary teaching credential and an added authorization in computer science.

Amount: Full payment of CSUDH mandatory registration fees

Requirements:

  • Must be a student pursuing their preliminary teaching credential and an added authorization in computer science
  • Must have, or be in a process of completing, a computer science undergraduate degree

James E. Williams Memorial Scholarship

The James E. Williams Memorial Scholarship is designated for a student enrolled in the teacher credential program at CSUDH. The successful applicant should plan to teach at an inner city or economically challenged school.

Amount: Varies, up to $500

Requirements:

  • Enrollment in the teacher credential program
  • Applicant plans to teach at an inner city or economically challenged school
  • Commitment to first year of teaching in an inner-city school
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Demonstrated financial need

How to Apply

The COE Scholarship application can be completed online through your CSUDH portal.

Before you apply:

  1. Review the application and prepare your responses to the application questions.
    • You must complete a series of four questions with two additional questions for MA students who wish to be considered for two of the MA scholarships. You may want to complete in MS Word or another word processing program to write and edit. Then you may cut and paste into the application. Specific details are provided in the application online.
  2. Ask your Professor or advisor for a letter of recommendation.
    • You will be asked to upload one signed letter of recommendation. Let your recommender know that the letters must be sent to you before the deadline so you may upload. Give them at least 2 weeks to complete the recommendation. 
    • Note: If you are in a preliminary credential program and would like to be considered for the Laura E. Settle Scholarship ($4000), please submit two letters of recommendation.
  3. Prepare your Resume.
    • You will be asked to provide a resume with your application.

Complete the Application:

  1. Log onto your CSUDH Student Center and choose the scholarship button.
  2. Choose the apply to CSUDH Scholarships and log in using your regular log on information.
  3. Choose the College of Education Scholarships
  4. Start Application. You will be asked a series of questions which allows the scholarship committee to determine the scholarships for which you are eligible. Continue to complete using the next button. Once the application is completed with all of the items mentioned above, you will be asked to submit.

After you Apply:
If you are selected for one of the scholarships, the money is deposited into your student financial account.

Note: You must be enrolled during the academic year for which you are applying.

Grants and Loan Forgiveness Programs

The Golden State Teacher Grant Program

GSTG provides up to $20,000 for students who are enrolled in a preliminary teaching credential program or a pupil personnel services credential. Students must have unmet financial eligibility and agree to teach in a high needs school for four years. More information about the grant and the list of high needs schools may be found at the California Student Aid Commission website: https://www.csac.ca.gov/gstg


Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program

Under the Teacher Loan Forgiveness (TLF) Program, if you teach full time for five complete and consecutive academic years in a low-income school or educational service agency, and meet other qualifications, you may be eligible for forgiveness of up to $17,500.


Federal Perkins Loan

You may be eligible to have all or a portion of your Federal Perkins Loan canceled (based on your employment or volunteer service) or discharged (under certain conditions).


Public Service Loan Forgiveness

If you’re employed by a government or not-for-profit organization, you might be eligible for the PSLF Program. The PSLF Program forgives the remaining balance on your Direct Loans
