Pamela D. Emerson Environmental and Social Justice Scholarship

The Pamela D. Emerson Environmental and Social Justice Scholarship is an endowed scholarship in the College of Arts and Humanities.

Pamela D. Emerson distinguished herself in a long and noteworthy career at the California Coastal Commission. Pamela was a major force in protecting the Ballona Lagoon and Venice Canals. She consistently fought to protect coastal access for the public and helped to steer projects on the coastline to best protect the environment and serve the public’s best interests. She was also committed to social justice and was an active member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee during her college years. Pam supported various environmental and social justice groups and projects. The establishment of the Pamela D. Emerson Environmental and Social Justice Scholarship honors the spirit of her commitment and will support future generations of Dominguez Hills students.

The selection of the scholarship recipient will be made by a scholarship committee that shall be formed under the direction of the Chair of the Department of History. The annual scholarship will be granted to students who fulfill the requirements of the award.

Criteria for the award recipient(s) will be the following:

  1. History major or minor in good standing (2.0 GPA).
  2. Applicants must submit an essay analyzing environmental/social justice issues in any historical context.
  3. Annual award will be given. If funds are available, an additional scholarship/s (no more than two) can be awarded.
