Program Overview

Occupational Safety and Health Manager CertificateThe Occupational Safety and Heath for Managers and Supervisors certificate provides a defined path for individuals who are responsible for the overall safety of a company or institution, and who are responsible for the administrative and legal aspect of safety. This program allows the student to gain the knowledge and skills needed to supervise other safety professional, manage risk, and manage potential OSHA cases. Typically these individuals are Directors, Managers and Supervisors and Human Resources representatives.

Learning Outcomes

Students who successfully complete the Certificate program will be able to:

  1. Describe basic elements of Risk Management, Worker’s Compensation losses and risk assessment.
  2. Understand the importance of a full range of leadership concepts and the relation between employee morale and organizational productivity
  3. Implement oral, written and non-verbal communication techniques to improve daily interactions with employees, co-workers and supervisors
  4. Describe Cal/OSHA’s requirement for employers to develop and implement an effective Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP)
  5. Implement strategies and techniques to communicate with a multicultural workforce
  6. Describe basic accident/incident investigation procedures and analysis techniques
  7. Describe Cal/OSHA’s legal process including the appeals process and how to file an appeal before the Occupational Safety and Health Appeals Board
  8. Perform basic inspection using industry standard practices
  9. Demonstrate understanding of specific OSHA standards and regulations
  10. Identify common violations of OSHA standards and propose abatement actions which fulfill regulatory mandates

To earn the Occupational Safety and Health Certificate for Managers and Supervisors, participants must complete total of 8 required courses and 3 elective courses.

Certificate Requirements

To earn the Occupational Safety and Health for Managers and Supervisors certificate, the individual will have to successfully complete 8 required courses and 3 elective courses. All of the required courses must be completed through CSUDH OTI Education Center. All courses must be completed within a 5 year period. Courses taken through other official OSHA Training Institute Education Centers can be used to fulfill up to 4 elective courses for the certificate of completion.

Who Should Attend

Supervisors, company owners, top and middle management, loss control representatives, workers compensation administrators, risk management personnel, safety managers and safety engineers and human resources personnel.

Eligibility Requirements

Individuals seeking to complete this program must have a minimum of 2 years of experience overseeing safety.

Special Features

Courses are offered for continuing Education Units (CEUs). Nationally recognized standards govern attendance requirements to earn CEU credits. A permanent record is established and students may request CSU Dominguez Hills’ transcript either online or by calling the University Records office. Students not pursuing the certificate of completion may take individual courses.

188 Hours

Other Time, including lab:
All Courses have lab components that may require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE)

Program Prerequisites:
—At least high school-level math, reading, language and writing skills
—Minimum 2 years of experience in the industry in which you intend to apply this training
